There is no doubt that everyone has had an earache at one other time or another and more than likely will experience one in the future. Because of that, below are a few home remedies that could help you out the next time that you have a nagging earache.
Take your hair dryer and make sure that it is set on warm and not hot. Hold the dryer a little bit away from your ear and let the warm air blow into your ear. You can also use a heating pad, turn it on warm and then lay the ear with the earache on the heating pad. The warm air and the warmth from both items will help to ease the pain. Don't use the hair dryer for any longer than five minutes however.
Take a clove of garlic and then try to squeeze out all of the juice that is in it. Take this garlic juice and go ahead and pour it into your hear that hurts. Garlic has a natural antibiotic in it and this could help to fight any infection that you might have going on in your ear.
You can also take either a few drops of olive oil or a few drops of mineral oil into the ear that has the earache. What the oil does is act like a lubricant and could help to get rid of the dry and itchy symptoms that come with a possible ear infection. You should warm the oil up like warming a baby bottle by holding it under running hot water for a few minutes. Be sure to test the oil on your skin before pouring it into your ear. The oil should be no more than body temperature. Then take an ear dropper and apply the oil into ear. Only put enough oil in to coat the inner lining of your ear.
You can take a hot water bottle and then put it in a towel. You can use this wrapped hot water bottle like a pillow and lay your sore ear on it. Again, it's the heat from this bottle that will help to relieve the pain in your ear.
You can help ventilate your Eustachian tube and clear the way by chewing gum and swallowing as you chew. The could also help to alleviate the pressure that you might be having that is being caused by an inner ear infection. If your ear still hurts when you chew, this could have something to do with your jaw and you really should go and see a doctor about this.
When you have an earache, sometimes it's better if you sit up and try to avoid laying down if you can. Try just propping yourself up until the earache is done. Make sure to drink lots of fluids to help soothe the symptoms by swallowing.
Note: If the earache is persistent, you really should call your doctor and make an appointment to see him or her.
